The story is set in Lancashire, England and begins in 1941, ending in 2005.

A novel about five different couples, covering some sensitive matters including the debilitating diseases of Dementia, Cancer and Heart failure. The work of fiction has a romantic thread, partly devoted to the LGBT community.

William Hayworth comes back from the War, where his sweetheart Marjory Robinson, has been waiting patiently for his return. They marry and have two children; Maisie and Stanley.

Maisie, a midwife, one day meets, Doctor David Ainscough who shows a special interest in the young petite attractive woman. Stanley sets out on a different path in life and finds himself travelling to places that he never dreamed of.

Emily Carruthers, a lady who lived alone in the village of Kirkham, lets her spare room to Michelle Thomas, a young woman who is not all she seems. Later, when Michelle disappears without a word, Emily, once again on her own, decides to take in Grace O’Hearn, an Irish woman, who has fled her home and is looking for somewhere to stay.

Lucy Curtis is anxious to find a replacement flatmate when her friend and tenant, Chrissie Taylor leaves to get married. She thinks an old friend will help her out, but when she goes in search of her, she finds that she no longer lives at her old address.

Chrissie, now divorced, eventually leaves Fleetwood to begin a new life in Yorkshire.
