Sometimes your passion for something, and your talent for it, don’t intersect at the same time. Or even anytime soon. I found pirates as a kid, reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. And I enjoyed writing when I was in school. But it wasn’t until several decades later that the pirate passion kicked in and my writing skills were sufficiently developed. Game on.

At their worst, we think of pirates as thieves and killers. At their best (did they have a best?) we think of them as societal rebels or Robin Hoods. But to truly know them is to understand their stories. And their choices—between involuntary conscription and freedom; between overbearing/punishing captains and self-regulated, democratic partnership; and between long, boring poverty and a short but vibrant life seeking fun, fame and fortune by the moment. Some were more privateer than pirate. Some were knighted, or even appointed governor. Whatever your take, you have to agree—they left a rich legacy.

My Pyrate Series Novels explore the richness of pirate lives, relationships and challenges—many of which bear surprising similarities to today’s world.

Pyrate Rising is my debut novel. It was named a Finalist for the 2021 Page Turner Awards Writing Award. Launched in November 2021, it was soon listed as the #1 New Seller in a Teen/Young Adult category by Amazon.com. [I placed it in the Young Adult category only because that’s the only category that even listed pirates. But it’s truly an adult read.]

Pyrate Assassin, the second novel in the series, was similarly a 2021 Writing Award Finalist. The book will launch early in 2022.

Reidr Daniels is my pen name. “Reidr” was a nickname my friends gave me early on. They had other names, of course, but this one works best. “Daniels” is an ode to my paternal grandfather, a WWI veteran who lived to be 101.

Pyrate on!
